We are pleased to announce the safe release of the 137 pupils who were kidnapped from a public school in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The children, along with the school’s principal, were abducted by unknown gunmen on March 7 from the joint premises of a primary and secondary school in Kuriga community during the students’ morning assembly.
After nearly three weeks in captivity, the children have been rescued, bringing an end to their harrowing ordeal. The news was confirmed by Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, one of President Bola Tinubu’s spokespersons, in a Facebook post on Sunday, March 24.
In his statement, Mr. Abdulaziz expressed gratitude, saying, “To God be the glory, all the 137 abducted school children in the Kuriga community have been rescued.”
It is important to note that earlier reports from the school authority had indicated a higher number of abducted children, 287. However, it is now unclear whether the initial count was inaccurate or if there are still others in captivity.
This development brings relief and joy to the families of the abducted children, as well as the entire community. The safe return of these children underscores the importance of concerted efforts by security agencies and stakeholders in ensuring the safety and security of our schools and communities.
We commend the efforts of all those involved in the rescue operation and urge for continued vigilance and proactive measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
