Ogun Monarch Calls for School Repairs After Classroom Collapse Kills Pupil

The Alase of Ilase Kingdom in the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba John Olaifa, has urged the state government to expedite the repair of Mayigi Community Comprehensive High School after a classroom collapse claimed the life of a 14-year-old Junior Secondary School 3 pupil, Timothy Amosun.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday due to a heavy rainstorm, also left nine others injured and destroyed several classrooms.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Information and Strategy, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, expressed the governor’s sorrow over the pupil’s death, describing the news as shocking.

Speaking on Thursday, Oba Olaifa noted that the school was originally built by the community before being handed over to the government. He acknowledged the government’s contributions to the school’s infrastructure and appealed for urgent repairs to ensure students can resume their studies without further disruption.

“The incident is saddening. It was caused by a rainstorm. The school was constructed by the community before it was handed over to the government. Our appeal to the government is to hasten the repair of the school so that the students can continue their learning,” he said.

Meanwhile, Akinmade confirmed that the government would cover the medical expenses of the injured. He added that Governor Abiodun had directed relevant agencies to transfer critically injured victims to specialist hospitals for better medical care.

Additionally, the governor instructed the Commissioner for Education to visit the victims’ families and the school to assess the damage and determine the necessary steps for rebuilding the affected classrooms.
