APC Chairman Predicts More Governors Will Join Ruling Party Before 2027 Election
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has expressed optimism that more state governors and political leaders will defect to the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yilwatda, represented by APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Emma Eneukwu, made the remark during the Bayelsa State chapter’s 12th expanded stakeholders’ meeting in Yenagoa on Tuesday, where members endorsed President Bola Tinubu for re-election.
“Our doors are still open. More governors are moving into our party, more personalities are joining—including senators and members of the House of Representatives—because of the calibre, integrity, and performance of the person we made president,” Yilwatda stated.
He cited the recent defections of Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwore, and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in support of Tinubu’s second-term bid.
Dismissing the opposition, Yilwatda compared President Tinubu to a lion undisturbed by distractions.
“Other people are running around trying to challenge the president in 2027, but when you have a lion and small animals are barking, the lion doesn’t take notice. He goes about his duties,” he said.
The APC chairman also praised South-South governors for what he described as their political realism, noting that their defection underscores Tinubu’s leadership qualities and broad appeal.
“They are leaving their parties to join the APC and support Mr. President in 2027 so that governance will be easier after an overwhelming victory,” he added.
He further urged APC members in Bayelsa to remain united as the state prepares for the next election. Former Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, also reaffirmed the party’s unity in the state while expressing confidence in its readiness for the 2027 polls.
