Best Graduating Student of Wesley Varsity Shares Reason for Academic Success

By Dayo Johnson, Akure

Miss Ifeoluwa Mercy Adeyemi, the overall best-graduating student for the 2023/2024 academic session at Wesley University, Ondo, has explained the choices that led to her exceptional academic performance. Speaking at the institution’s 13th convocation ceremony in Ondo town, the 19-year-old microbiology graduate, with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.97, disclosed that she refrained from having a boyfriend during her four-year course to avoid distractions.

Adeyemi stated, “For me, having a boyfriend would have been a distraction. I cannot divide my mind. A boyfriend might demand my attention, which would prevent me from putting my total effort into my studies.” She added that her decision was rooted in her determination to make her parents proud, emphasizing, “Anytime I found distractions, I would remind myself: your parents are out there, and you need to make them proud.”

Although she ruled out having a boyfriend for now, Adeyemi expressed openness to the idea at the right time. Looking forward, she aspires to further her education with a master’s degree and eventually a Ph.D., aiming to become a researcher focused on solving global health challenges.

Speaking on her course of study, microbiology, Adeyemi shared, “I want to solve problems in this world, especially in the health sector. Microbiology deals with microorganisms, which are central to diseases and health, so I need to focus on it.”

Wesley University Celebrates Academic Excellence

The Vice-Chancellor of Wesley University, Prof. Sunday Samuel Obeka, revealed that out of 230 graduating students, 39 achieved First Class Honours. He highlighted the institution’s dedication to holistic education that combines intellectual sharpness, character development, and preparation for community service and self-reliance.

Obeka also called on the government to support private universities’ medical colleges, such as Wesley University’s programs in health sciences, to address the country’s shortage of health workers.

The convocation ceremony featured several notable events, including a lecture delivered by Sir Demola Aladekomo and a spiritual crusade led by guest speaker Pastor Sunday Ogwuche, themed “Wesleyan Heritage: A Panacea for Physical, Social & Spiritual Growth.”

Senior Pastor Paul Enenche, the institution’s Chancellor, awarded ¦100,000 to each First Class graduate. In his address, Enenche encouraged the graduates to embrace their roles as change-makers in society.

During the ceremony, Olori Comfort Kiladejo, wife of the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba (Dr.) Victor Kiladejo, received an honorary degree in Entrepreneurship and Humanitarian Service.
