Breaking News: Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu Impeached

The Edo State House of Assembly has impeached the state’s deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, on Monday. The impeachment followed the adoption of the report of the seven-man investigative panel set up by the Assembly to probe allegations of misconduct against Shaibu. The impeachment proceedings, which were initiated earlier this week, culminated in a dramatic vote that saw Shaibu ousted from his position.

Background
The seven-man panel investigating allegations of constitutional breaches against the Edo State deputy governor concluded its sitting on Friday without Shaibu or his counsel appearing. The panel forwarded its report to the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa.

During the panel’s inaugural sitting, Shaibu was represented by Professor Oladoyin Awoyale (SAN), who informed the panel that he would not be continuing with the proceedings due to an Abuja High Court case. Despite objections, the panel overruled and adjourned for the last time on Friday to allow Shaibu to defend himself. Justice Omonuwa (Rtd), the chairman of the panel, ruled that the panel would retire to write its report as required by the constitution.
