Celebrating 64 Years of Excellence: The Legacy of Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, marks an impressive 64 years on the throne, making him the world’s longest-reigning paramount monarch. His ascension to the throne on April 2, 1960, just before Nigeria’s independence, was a momentous occasion, witnessing the convergence of dignitaries including Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo and Ijebu notables. His reign has been a testament to strength, character, and a commitment to the development of Ijebuland.

The origin of the Ijebu people, though steeped in oral tradition, is believed to trace back to the Southern Sudanese region of Owadaiye, now known as Waddai. The Ijebu people’s migration into Nigeria and their settlement in present-day Ijebuland is a testament to their resilience and adaptability.

Oba Adetona’s coronation was a historic event, graced by the Governor of Western Region, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola. Since then, Oba Adetona has been a beacon of progress, fostering religious harmony and unity among his people. His commitment to education is unparalleled, as evidenced by his efforts to preserve the Tai Solarin University of Education and his support for various educational institutions.

In his role as a traditional ruler, Oba Adetona has exemplified the virtues of integrity, transparency, and equity. He has been a voice against corruption, urging his people to uphold decency and morality. His reign has brought honour and dignity to the traditional institution, making it attractive to professionals and business leaders of royal lineage.

The Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance, established by the monarch, reflects his commitment to good governance and societal development. This initiative, housed at Olabisi Onabanjo University, is a testament to Oba Adetona’s vision for a better Nigeria.

As Oba Adetona continues to lead with wisdom and foresight, we celebrate his legacy of excellence and service to Ijebuland and Nigeria. May his reign be long, peaceful, and beneficial to all.
