Davido Commissions Abia University Hostel Named After Late Mother, Veronica Adeleke
Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, on Sunday commissioned a female hostel at Clifford University, Abia State, named in honour of his late mother, Dr. Veronica Adeleke.
The unveiling took place during the institution’s 6th Convocation Ceremony, where Davido also delivered an inspiring commencement address to the graduating class. The newly inaugurated building, known as the Veronica Adeleke Hostel, stands as a tribute to the late educationist and philanthropist.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Davido encouraged the graduates to live with purpose and use their gifts to make a difference in the world.
“When I looked into their faces, I saw the same fire that built me — that hunger to be seen, to make something out of nothing, to turn pain into power,” he said.
“I told them that talent might open the door, but purpose gives it meaning.”
Reflecting on the emotional moment, Davido described the hostel dedication as a continuation of his mother’s legacy of compassion and education.
“My mother, Dr. Veronica Adeleke, was a teacher and giver who believed education and compassion could change lives. This building is a continuation of her purpose — turning love into legacy,” he wrote.
During the event, the singer was joined by his longtime friend and business associate, Cubana Chief Priest, who announced a generous pledge to pay the school fees of 50 students.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Chimezie Omeonu, praised Davido for his contribution to education and for inspiring young Africans to strive for excellence.
The ceremony concluded with the ribbon-cutting of the Veronica Imade Adeleke Female Hostel, attended by the university’s management, dignitaries, guests, and enthusiastic students.
