The serene Okuoma community in the Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State has been plunged into chaos, with several houses ablaze in the aftermath of the killing of 16 soldiers on a peacekeeping mission. Among the deceased were a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, and 12 soldiers, tragically slain by youths on Thursday.
The Director of Information at the Defence Headquarters, Tukur Gusau, confirmed the devastating incident, revealing that the troops were surrounded and brutally killed by community youths during what was supposed to be a peaceful mission to Okuoma.
Responding to the grave situation, Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has issued an immediate order for a thorough investigation into the incident. Videos captured by Channels Television depict thick, black smoke billowing from numerous buildings in the community, a stark reminder of the destruction and turmoil that has befallen the area.
The harrowing events have instilled fear among residents, prompting some to flee in anticipation of potential reprisal attacks from military forces.
