FG Introduces New Curriculum for Basic, Secondary, and Technical Schools

The Federal Government has launched a new curriculum framework for basic, senior secondary, and technical education, aimed at reducing content overload and improving the quality of learning across schools in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, announced the development on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa.

Collaboration with Key Agencies

According to Prof. Ahmad, the comprehensive review was conducted in collaboration with relevant education agencies, including the:

  • Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC)
  • Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC)
  • National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC)
  • National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)
    as well as other stakeholders in the sector.

Subject Allocation

The new curriculum structure introduces a more balanced distribution of subjects across different school levels:

  • Primary 1–3: 9–10 subjects
  • Primary 4–6: 10–12 subjects
  • Junior Secondary School (JSS): 12–14 subjects
  • Senior Secondary School (SSS): 8–9 subjects
  • Technical Schools: 9–11 subjects

Goals of the Reform

Prof. Ahmad explained that the reforms are designed to:

  • Reduce excessive workload on students
  • Allow more time for in-depth and practical learning
  • Align Nigeria’s education system with contemporary global standards

She commended stakeholders for their contributions and assured that the ministry would enforce strict monitoring mechanisms to ensure effective adoption and smooth transition nationwide.
