FG Releases ₦50bn to ASUU, Others for Earned Allowances
The Federal Government has disbursed ₦50 billion to academic and non-academic staff unions of federal universities to settle earned allowances, fulfilling a key promise made by President Bola Tinubu. This development was announced on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, through a statement released by the Ministry’s Director of Press, Folasade Boriowo.
According to Boriowo, the release of the funds underscores the Tinubu administration’s strong commitment to overhauling Nigeria’s education sector. She described it as more than a financial intervention—rather, a clear demonstration of the government’s dedication to repositioning the nation as a knowledge-driven economy through targeted investments in education, infrastructure, and human capital.
“This intervention is not just a financial transaction—it is a reaffirmation of our President’s belief in the capacity of Nigerian youth and the invaluable role that academic and non-academic staff play in nurturing them,” the Minister was quoted as saying. “By prioritising their welfare, we are laying the foundation for a future where every Nigerian child receives highly qualitative and globally competitive education,” she added.
Dr. Alausa also conveyed President Tinubu’s deep appreciation to the unions for their trust in the administration and for fostering a stable academic environment. He noted that Nigeria is currently witnessing one of the longest uninterrupted academic periods in its recent history—an achievement he attributed to the mutual understanding between the government and stakeholders in the university system.
The ₦50 billion intervention is expected to further enhance morale within the academic community and sustain the current momentum in Nigeria’s federal universities.
