In a recent address at a youth leadership symposium, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo suggested that Nigeria could benefit from seeking advice from Zimbabwe to address its current high inflation rates. He pointed out that Zimbabwe had successfully overcome a similar economic challenge and could offer valuable insights to Nigeria. The symposium, which took place at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, was themed “Opportunities for Peace: Roles of the Youths in Conflict Prevention in Africa.”
Obasanjo highlighted the need for Nigeria to confront its economic challenges directly, drawing on the experiences of other nations that have faced similar difficulties. He emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences and seeking innovative solutions to current problems. The former President noted that while Nigeria’s approach to addressing inflation may differ from Zimbabwe’s, there is much to be gained from asking questions and learning from others’ experiences.
Addressing the issue of conflict resolution, Obasanjo stressed the importance of dialogue and peaceful means in resolving conflicts. He urged African youth to champion peace and to persuade those who believe in violence as a solution to conflicts to reconsider their stance. Drawing on biblical references, Obasanjo emphasized the virtues of kindness, mercy, and forgiveness as essential ingredients for a peaceful society.
The symposium, organized by the Centre for Human Security and Dialogue in collaboration with the Institute for African Culture and International Understanding, sought to empower African youth to promote peace and security on the continent. Participants were encouraged to cultivate a culture of peace and humaneness, following the examples of biblical figures such as Esther and Joseph, who played pivotal roles in securing peace and fighting famine, respectively.
The event’s coordinator, Prof. Peter Okebukola, emphasized the importance of meaningful youth involvement in peace-building efforts. He underscored the need for inclusive policies and international collaboration to empower West African youths as catalysts for positive change and to create a more peaceful and harmonious society.
In conclusion, Obasanjo’s call for Nigeria to seek Zimbabwe’s assistance in addressing inflation reflects a broader commitment to finding practical solutions to the country’s economic challenges. The symposium’s focus on youth empowerment and conflict prevention underscores the importance of proactive measures in building a peaceful and prosperous Africa.
