France Makes History with Constitutional Abortion Rights

France has made history by becoming the first country to enshrine abortion as a constitutional right for women. The French Parliament overwhelmingly voted in favor of the law, with a decisive 780-to-72 majority. This landmark decision guarantees a “guaranteed freedom” for abortion in France, ensuring access to abortion services for women in the country.

The move comes at a time when abortion rights are facing challenges globally, making France’s decision even more significant. The country first legalized abortion in 1975, but by including it in the constitution, France has made it a permanent right that cannot be overturned by future governments or laws.

In a symbolic gesture, the Eiffel Tower was illuminated with the slogan “My body, my choice” following the passage of the law. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal highlighted the moral obligation to honor the struggles of women who faced dangerous illegal abortions in the past, stating, “Above all, we are sending a clear message to all women: your body belongs to you.”

President Macron announced plans for a formal ceremony to commemorate the passage of the amendment on International Women’s Day (March 8th). However, the Catholic Church remains opposed to the decision, with the Pontifical Academy for Life stating that there can be no ‘right’ to take human life. The French bishops also expressed their opposition to the law before the vote.
