Heavy rainfall causes flooding, disrupts activities in Lagos and Ogun states

Residents and motorists in parts of Lagos and Ogun states faced severe challenges on Sunday due to heavy rainfall, causing major roads to be flooded and leaving many stranded. Areas such as Agege, Akowonjo, and Egbeda in Lagos, as well as Mayegun junction on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Akute, Lotto, Pakuro, and Ijere in Ogun State, experienced flooding, disrupting normal activities.

In Agege, the Mobil area was completely submerged, making it impossible for drivers to pass through. Similarly, the Baba Oba and Car Wash ends of the Egbeda-Ikotun road were flooded, causing traffic congestion and forcing vehicles to drive slowly through the water. The situation was similar in Akowonjo, where the road was covered with water, leading to slow-moving traffic.

Residents and commuters expressed frustration, stating that flooding was a recurring issue during the rainy season. They lamented the impact on economic activities, as shops were affected, and customers avoided the area. Some blamed the incomplete drainage construction for exacerbating the problem, noting that the situation was likely to worsen in the coming weeks.

Residents in communities like Lotto, Pakuro, and Ijere also reported flooding, attributing it to poor drainage systems and calling for urgent action from local officials. They expressed concern about the impact on businesses and the difficulty of navigating the roads.

Government officials, however, assured that measures were in place to address flooding issues, with a feedback mechanism for residents to report incidents and receive assistance. Despite these assurances, residents and businesses remain concerned about the impact of flooding on their daily lives and livelihoods.
