Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has revealed that he once converted from Christianity to Islam, though he now remains uncertain about the absolute truth of religion.
Speaking in an interview with Plaqueboymax, the Grammy Award-winning artist shared that he was raised as a Christian because it was the faith of his parents and the dominant belief in his environment. However, as he grew older, he made a conscious decision to embrace Islam and later explored various other religions in search of deeper spiritual understanding.
Burna Boy admitted that his religious exploration has left him with more questions than answers, describing religion as a “controlled mechanism.”
“I grew up as a Christian because that’s what my parents believed in and what I was born into. But then I converted to Islam and tried all types. I’ve studied it all, yet I’m still trying to find what’s really going on,” he said.
He added that his research into different belief systems often revealed scientific facts that contradicted religious teachings.
“In all my research, there’s always one scientific fact that goes against every book. Everything comes from the workshop of the sun,” he noted.
Despite his uncertainty, Burna Boy said he remains deeply spiritual, believing that there is a higher power guiding and protecting him.
“I believe we are creations, and if we are creations, there must be a creator. Everyone has their own version, and that’s what confuses me. But I know there’s something up there protecting me. That I’m in tune with. When I pray, I feel like I’m being heard,” he concluded.
