IBEDC Explains Sagamu’s Blackout, Promises Restoration

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Sagamu business hub, has provided insights into the factors contributing to the current state of poor power supply in Sagamu. The management of IBEDC assured customers of efforts to restore regular power supply despite challenges faced.

One significant factor identified by IBEDC is the alarming increase in energy theft, with over 1,450 cases reported between January and February 2024. This illegal activity has contributed to the strain on the power supply infrastructure in Sagamu.

Additionally, IBEDC highlighted the low supply of gas to generating companies (Gencos) as a primary factor affecting power generation. The decrease in available generation has limited the amount of power transmitted to IBEDC, thus impacting their ability to provide adequate power to customers in Sagamu.

Furthermore, scheduled maintenance activities conducted by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in January and March 2024 have also contributed to the power supply challenges in Sagamu. While these maintenance activities are crucial for ensuring the long-term reliability of the electricity infrastructure, IBEDC recognizes the inconvenience they may cause to customers.

Despite these challenges, IBEDC remains optimistic about the future of power supply in Sagamu. The Honorable Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has taken urgent steps to address the gas supply issue, which is expected to improve the power generation situation.

IBEDC is implementing comprehensive measures to strengthen its infrastructure and explore alternate sources of power to meet the energy demands of Sagamu. The management apologized for the inconvenience caused by the current blackout and reassured customers of their commitment to restoring regular power supply as soon as possible.
