MTN, Others Obtain Permits to Generate Electricity

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued permits to Golden Penny Power Limited, MTN Communications Nigeria Limited, Havenhill Synergy, and several others to generate electricity for mini-grid systems. In the first quarter of 2024, NERC granted nine new off-grid generation licenses with a total capacity of 109.69 megawatts and issued three new trading licenses.

Golden Penny Power Limited received a license to build six off-grid gas plants across Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Cross River states, with a combined capacity of 100MW. MTN was granted a permit to construct four captive generation plants in Lagos with a total capacity of 15.94MW. Other companies, including SweetCo Foods Limited and African Steel Mills Nigeria Limited, were also authorized to generate captive power.

The NERC’s push for renewable energy development led to the issuance of three mini-grid permits and two registration certificates during the same period. Additionally, six Meter Service Providers were certified, including both meter installers and manufacturers.

These developments highlight the ongoing efforts to improve Nigeria’s power generation capacity, particularly through off-grid and renewable energy sources.
