NCC Directs Telecom Operators to Block SIMs Without NINs
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a directive to all telecom operators to disconnect telephone subscribers who have not linked their National Identification Numbers (NIN) to their SIM cards. This directive, reiterated by Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, emphasizes the critical national security importance of linking NINs to SIM cards.
In a statement delivered by Mr. Reuben Mouka, Director of Public Affairs at the NCC, during the 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair, the NCC reaffirmed the February 28th deadline for compliance. Failure to link NINs to SIM cards by this date will result in the barring of phone lines for affected subscribers.
Dr. Maida highlighted the NCC’s commitment to protecting consumers’ rights and ensuring their satisfaction. He also emphasized the NCC’s role in promoting local content development in the telecom industry. The NCC aims to create a vibrant telecommunications industry that significantly contributes to economic recovery and growth.
The NCC further disclosed that as of 2023, the telecoms industry’s contribution to Nigeria’s GDP stood at 13.5%, according to the Nigerian Gross Domestic Product Report November 2023 by the National Bureau of Statistics.
In conclusion, the NCC urged telecom firms to prioritize customer satisfaction and uphold the highest standards of service delivery. The NCC has implemented measures to safeguard the interests of consumers and businesses alike, including the directive for licensed Mobile Network Operators to implement approved Harmonised Short Codes for providing services to Nigerian telecom consumers.
