NCC Issues Warning: SIM Cards Without NIN Linkage to be Deactivated by Month’s End

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), has issued a stern warning that SIM cards not linked to National Identity Numbers (NIN) will face deactivation by the end of February. This bold move underscores the NCC’s commitment to enhancing security and accountability within the telecommunications sector. Furthermore, Dr. Maida emphasized the robust collaboration between NCC, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and relevant security agencies to combat telecommunication-related crimes, signaling a unified front against illicit activities.

In a bid to accelerate broadband penetration across Nigeria, the NCC is actively exploring the deployment of satellite broadband technology, a strategic initiative aimed at achieving a 70% broadband penetration target by 2025. This ambitious endeavor reflects the commission’s determination to bridge the digital divide and foster inclusive connectivity nationwide.

Addressing the pervasive issue of illegal Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) registration, Dr. Maida underscored the commission’s unwavering stance, signaling forthcoming sanctions against identified offenders. This resolute stance serves as a deterrent to those engaging in fraudulent practices, safeguarding the integrity of the telecommunications ecosystem.

Moreover, Dr. Maida reaffirmed the NCC’s unwavering commitment to consumer welfare, asserting that consumers remain the top priority. This customer-centric approach is underpinned by a dedication to transparency and fairness, ensuring that consumers are empowered with clear information regarding network tariffs and services.

In alignment with this commitment, Dr. Maida revealed that Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have pledged to simplify their tariffs, enabling Nigerians to make informed decisions when purchasing data plans. To formalize this commitment, the NCC is considering regulatory measures to enforce tariff simplicity, thereby enhancing transparency and accountability within the telecommunications industry.

Overall, Dr. Aminu Maida’s decisive leadership underscores the NCC’s proactive stance in addressing critical challenges while prioritizing consumer interests and industry sustainability. Through strategic partnerships and regulatory initiatives, the NCC is poised to drive meaningful progress and innovation within Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.
