Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Mobilizes Nationwide Protest to Address Soaring Cost of Living

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans for a two-day nationwide protest to draw attention to the escalating cost of living that has burdened millions of Nigerian workers. The protest, scheduled for February 27 and 28, aims to highlight the hardships faced by workers as a result of high inflation, currency devaluation, and other economic challenges.

The decision to protest comes following an alarming prediction by the African Development Bank (AfDB) warning of potential social unrest in Nigeria and other African countries due to rising fuel and commodity prices. The AfDB’s projection underscores the urgent need for action to address the economic challenges facing the country.

In addition to the protest, the NLC is set to commence negotiations for a new minimum wage that reflects the current economic realities. The NLC emphasizes the importance of ensuring that workers’ wages are not only adjusted to meet the rising cost of living but also provide for their basic needs and promote a decent standard of living.

While the NLC is committed to peaceful protests, the police have cautioned against any form of violence. Law enforcement agencies in various states are working closely with labour leaders to ensure that the protests are conducted peacefully and do not disrupt public order or safety.

The NLC remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the welfare of workers and improving their living standards. The congress calls on all workers and citizens to join in the protest and make their voices heard in demanding a better quality of life for all Nigerians.
