NLC Announces Nationwide Protest Amid Economic Hardship
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared a two-day nationwide mass protest slated for February 27 and 28 to voice grievances over the prevailing economic challenges facing the country. The announcement was made by Joe Ajaero at Labour House, Abuja, during an ongoing press conference. This protest is a response to the growing hardship experienced by Nigerians across various sectors.
Despite warnings from the government, including President Bola Tinubu, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) remain steadfast in their decision to proceed with the strike. The labour leaders are calling for urgent action to address the issues affecting workers and citizens, including inflation, unemployment, and general economic instability.
In a meeting with officials of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, chaired by the Minister of State for Labour, Neiruka Onyejeocha, the labour leaders reiterated that only the government could avert the planned strike. They emphasized the need to address the 15-point agreement reached on October 2, 2023, as a crucial step towards resolving the current crisis.
Despite pleas from the minister for the labour leaders to reconsider the strike, they remain resolute in their decision. The NLC and TUC are calling on the government to take concrete steps to improve the welfare of Nigerians and ensure a more conducive economic environment for all.
