No Evidence of New COVID Variant in Nigeria – FG
The Federal Government has confirmed that there is no evidence of the new COVID variant, XEC, in Nigeria. This clarification comes amid concerns following reports of the variant’s emergence in Australia and its subsequent spread to 29 countries.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Health, Alabi Balogun, Nigerians were urged to remain calm and continue adhering to basic hygiene practices.
Balogun highlighted that the government has taken proactive measures to combat COVID-19 by establishing molecular laboratories, isolation centers, and intensive care units with ventilators at federal tertiary hospitals.
He reassured the public, stating:
“You may recall that a newly detected COVID variant, XEC, was reported in Australia and has spread to about 29 countries globally, showing heightened virulence compared to other circulating strains. However, there is no evidence of the XEC variant in Nigeria.
“The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, through its agencies, has intensified surveillance, including monitoring at all entry points into Nigeria. Additionally, federal tertiary hospitals have been upgraded with modern facilities to handle potential cases.
“Since the COVID variant XEC has not been detected in Nigeria, it is essential to dispel misinformation and public fear regarding a possible resurgence of COVID-19 in the country,” the statement concluded.
Nigerians are encouraged to maintain universal hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing, to prevent the spread of any infectious diseases.
