Ogun 2027: The Battle for Abiodun’s Successor at Oke-Mosan
With less than two years to the 2027 general elections and the completion of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s second term, political activities in Ogun State are intensifying as contenders position themselves for the governorship seat at Oke-Mosan. Consultations, alliance-building, and strategic maneuvering are already underway across party lines.
Key Factors at Play
The contest will be shaped by several factors, including zoning, the influence of Governor Abiodun, and the roles of political godfathers. A strong agitation for power shift to Ogun West—the only zone yet to produce a governor since the state’s creation in 1976—has gained prominence, with leaders from the region mobilizing to secure the seat. Analysts, however, point to internal divisions within the zone as a major reason for its failure to clinch the governorship in nearly five decades.
The influence of political heavyweights such as former governors Olusegun Osoba (Ogun Central), Gbenga Daniel (Ogun East), and Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun Central) is also expected to play a decisive role in the succession race.
The Contenders
From the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC):
- Senator Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi): Currently representing Ogun West in the Senate, Adeola is regarded as a front-runner. After a long political career in Lagos, he returned to Ogun in 2023 to win the senatorial seat. With a strong political structure, developmental projects, and advocacy for Ogun West’s turn, he is seen as a formidable aspirant.
- Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele: The state’s Deputy Governor from Ota, Ogun West, is believed to be banking on the push for both a female governor and power shift to her zone. However, observers say her chances remain uncertain.
- Sarafa Tunji-Ishola: A former Secretary to the State Government, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, and Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK. A grassroots politician from Ogun Central, he is reportedly relying on the political machinery of ex-Governor Ibikunle Amosun.
- Gboyega Nasir Isiaka (GNI): A chartered accountant and federal lawmaker representing Imeko-Afon/Yewa North. Having contested for governor three times (2011, 2015, and 2019) under different parties, he remains a prominent Ogun West hopeful.
From the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP):
- Ladi Adebutu: The PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate and long-time player in Ogun politics. Though he narrowly lost to Abiodun by 13,915 votes, he maintains a strong grip on the party’s structure. A native of Iperu-Remo, the governor’s hometown, Adebutu remains the PDP’s most visible aspirant.
The Road Ahead
As the race builds momentum, social media campaigns and grassroots mobilization are already fueling a supremacy battle among supporters of different aspirants. With zoning, political endorsements, and grassroots strength in play, the 2027 governorship contest promises to be one of the most keenly fought in Ogun’s political history.
