The Ogun State Government has debunked widespread rumours suggesting that Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, has been renamed in honour of the late monarch and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
In a statement addressing the speculation, the state government clarified that there has been no change to the name of the university. It emphasized that the Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology located in Omu already stands as a tribute to the revered late Awujale.
Tracing the institution’s historical evolution, the government noted that the Ogun State College of Education was established in 1977 and later renamed Tai Solarin College of Education, Science and Technology in 1994. The institution was eventually upgraded to university status in 2005, becoming Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED).
Following its upgrade, questions arose from the National Universities Commission (NUC) regarding the university’s mandate to award both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and university degrees. To resolve this, the previous administration moved the College of Education segment to Omu, while TASUED remained in Ijagun under its original name.
The state government clarified that in 2022, Governor Dapo Abiodun formally named the Omu-based institution as Sikiru Kayode Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology, in honour of the late monarch.
Furthermore, the statement stressed that Governor Abiodun’s recent remarks during the 8th day Fidau prayer for Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona were merely reflective of past initiatives to honour the monarch. It confirmed that there was no mention of renaming TASUED, which is now under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government.
