Today, four women and two men were brought before the Tinubu Chief Magistrate Court by the police, facing charges related to the alleged assault and blackmail of popular Nollywood actress, Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal.

The individuals arraigned before Magistrate A. A. Paul are identified as Qudus Jokogbola, Suru Olawale, Edu Shakirat, Fausat Mohammed, Kafayat Ahmed, and Opere Simiat Morenike. According to police reports, along with two others who are currently at large, they are accused of committing the alleged offenses on February 5, 2024, at approximately 1:30 p.m. at Oba Akintoye Market, Lagos Island, Lagos State.

Upon their appearance in court and the reading of the charges against them, Mr. Sola Samuel appeared as the prosecutor, while Barrister S. Ade. Oshodi and Barrister Ademola Olabiyi represented the defendants and the nominal complainant’s lawyer, respectively.

The prosecutor stated that the defendants, along with the two others at large, conspired and forcefully assaulted Lizzy Anjorin, causing her grievous bodily harm, and disturbing public peace. These actions are said to be in violation of sections 411 and 413; 168(d) and 170(b) of the criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015, and are punishable under the same Act.

However, all defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.

Following their plea, the defense lawyer, Oshodi, representing all six defendants, highlighted that his clients are market men and women and requested bail on their behalf, urging the court to consider the circumstances.

In response, the prosecutor noted that the decision to grant bail lies with the court but emphasized the importance of ensuring the defendants’ attendance at future court proceedings.

Magistrate Paul, in his ruling, granted each defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum. The sureties are required to be residents of Lagos State with evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State government, among other conditions.

However, Magistrate Paul ordered that all defendants be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) until they meet the bail conditions.

The case has been adjourned to March 11 for further mention.

The charges against the defendants allege conspiracy to commit felony, assault causing bodily harm, and injury to the reputation of Lizzy Anjorin Lawal.
