Pope Leo XIV Names Nigeria Among Nations Where Christians Face Persecution

Pope Leo XIV has identified Nigeria as one of the countries where Christians continue to face discrimination and attacks, placing the nation alongside Bangladesh, Mozambique, Sudan, and others experiencing similar challenges.

The Pope made this statement on Sunday through his official X account, expressing deep concern over repeated assaults on Christian communities and places of worship across the globe. He called on believers everywhere to pray for peace, unity, and protection.

“I think especially of Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mozambique, Sudan, and other countries from which we frequently hear of attacks on communities and places of worship. God is a merciful Father who desires peace among all His children!” the pontiff wrote.

Pope Leo also extended his prayers to families in Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, where recent massacres have led to the loss of many civilian lives. He urged an end to violence and encouraged all believers to work together toward promoting the common good.

His comments align with earlier concerns raised by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who restored Nigeria’s designation as a “country of particular concern” (CPC) due to reports of religious persecution. The Nigerian government, however, has rejected this classification, maintaining that the nation remains a secular state that upholds freedom of religion.
