Super Falcons Qualify for Paris 2024 Olympics

After a 16-year absence, the Super Falcons of Nigeria have made a triumphant return to the Olympics by qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Led by Coach Randy Waldrum, the team secured their spot with a goalless draw against Bayana Bayana of South Africa, winning 1-0 on aggregate.

The decisive second leg, held in Pretoria, saw the Falcons showcasing a resolute defense, thwarting all attempts by the South African team to score. This historic qualification marks Nigeria’s first appearance in the Olympics since 2008, highlighting a significant achievement for the nation’s female football team.

The journey to qualification began with a 1-0 victory over Banyana Banyana in the first leg at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja. A first-half penalty by Rasheedat Ajibade set the Falcons on the path to victory, giving them a crucial advantage.

In the second leg, Uchenna Kanu’s close attempt was deflected for a corner, while Chiamaka Nnadozie’s strong performance in goal ensured the Falcons maintained their lead. This qualification comes after disappointments in the 2016 and 2020 qualifiers, where the team fell short to Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast, respectively.

Having reached the quarter-finals of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Falcons are poised to make a strong impact at the 2024 Olympics. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
