Tinubu Backs Creation of Anioma State : Senator Ned Nwoko

Speaking at the Izu Anioma Towns Union event in Abuja during the unveiling of the maiden Anioma Cultural Festival, Nwoko said the drive for the proposed state has reached its most promising stage in Nigeria’s recent political history.

He noted that 97 senators had earlier endorsed the bill seeking the establishment of Anioma State, describing the scale of legislative support as unprecedented. According to him, the proposed state would be carved out of the nine local government areas in Delta North — covering the Aniocha, Oshimili, Ika, and Ndokwa zones — while neighbouring communities such as Igbanke have also shown interest in joining.

Nwoko disclosed that both the Senate and House of Representatives’ constitutional amendment committees have agreed on the need for an additional state in the South-East to bring the region at par with others that have six states each.

He added that Senate President Godswill Akpabio supports the initiative, while President Tinubu has signalled readiness to approve the creation of Anioma State once all legislative and constitutional requirements are met.

“We have done our homework. The lobbying and consultations have been extensive. Nothing is being left undone,” Nwoko said, emphasizing that the movement is now approaching a decisive phase.

He further announced that political leaders, traditional rulers, and representatives from across the South-East would convene in Awka, Anambra State, next weekend to formally adopt Anioma as the preferred candidate for the proposed new state.

Outlining the remaining steps, Nwoko explained that the process would involve submitting formal documentation to the Presidency, securing approval from state Houses of Assembly and governors, and conducting a national referendum. Once completed, he said, President Tinubu would give his assent, marking what he described as a “historic and unifying moment” for Nigeria.

Calling for unity and perseverance, Nwoko concluded, “I did not begin this struggle, but I will finish it. Anioma State is close. A new chapter is coming.”
