Tinubu’s return from France prompts emergency meeting on food security
President Bola Tinubu returned to Nigeria from a private trip to Paris on Tuesday night, landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja aboard the presidential jet, NAF 001, around 9 pm. Notable government officials, including his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, were present to welcome him, alongside other dignitaries. Although the purpose of Tinubu’s visit remained undisclosed by the presidency, it marked his third trip to France and his 14th foreign visit since assuming office eight months ago.
His return coincided with protests in several Nigerian states over the escalating cost of living, particularly regarding food prices. In response, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris, revealed Tinubu’s directive for immediate interventions to address the situation and prevent further security challenges. Idris highlighted ongoing discussions within the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention to alleviate food shortages and stabilize prices.
Emphasizing that Nigeria has an adequate food supply, Idris noted the government’s engagement with millers and commodity traders to increase availability and curb price hikes. He also expressed concerns about certain actors exploiting currency depreciation and market dynamics for their gain, stressing the importance of addressing these issues comprehensively, with national security implications being considered.
