A medical tribunal in the United Kingdom has heard how a consultant anaesthetist, Dr. Suhail Anjum, left a patient under anaesthesia during surgery to have sex with a nurse at Tameside Hospital, Greater Manchester.
According to the proceedings, Dr. Anjum told colleagues he needed a “comfort break” and asked another doctor to monitor the patient. Instead, he went to another operating theatre where he engaged in sexual activity with Nurse C. Their actions were discovered when a shocked colleague walked in and reported the incident.
Andrew Molloy, representing the General Medical Council (GMC), told the panel that no harm came to the patient and the operation was completed without complications.
Dr. Anjum admitted the allegations, describing his conduct as “shameful.” He told the tribunal:
“It was quite shameful, to say the least. I only have myself to blame. I offer my sincere apologies to everyone involved and I want the opportunity to put this right.”
He explained that the lapse in judgment came during what he described as a “stressful time” for his family.
The hearing is expected to continue on Friday.
