UPDATED: Gunmen invade Kogi communities, 19 feared killed, houses razed
Gunmen have invaded two communities, Agojeju Odo and Abejukolo in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State, resulting in the tragic loss of lives and destruction of property.
Reports indicate that at least 19 people have been killed, and an unknown number of houses have been razed in the attack. The incident, described as a “reprisal,” occurred on Thursday, with the gunmen inflicting maximum damages on the communities.
Eyewitnesses in Lokoja revealed that the attackers, engaged in a conflict with Agatu militia in Benue State, extended their onslaught to Agojeju Odo, Ajokpachi Odo, Bagaji, and surrounding areas, destroying farm produce. According to a local resident who tragically lost his wife and children, the attackers accused the communities of colluding with the Agatus against them.
Local residents have called for urgent intervention from the state governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, and security agencies. They stated that the police in the Local Government Council were overwhelmed and overpowered by the invaders.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, stated that “19 people were killed in the communal clashes that occurred on Thursday.” He also mentioned that the police, alongside the Army and other security agencies, have been mobilized to restore peace in the area. Aya assured that peace has returned to the communities following the intervention of security forces.
