Veterinary nurse killed by lion he nursed for nine years at OAU zoo

Obafemi Awolowo University is deeply saddened to announce the tragic death of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a dedicated veterinary nurse, who was fatally injured by a lion at the university’s zoological garden on Monday afternoon. Mr. Olawuyi had been caring for the lion for nearly a decade and was a valued member of our team.

Despite the efforts of his colleagues who bravely attempted to rescue him, Mr. Olawuyi succumbed to his injuries. The aggressive lion responsible for the attack has been euthanized to ensure the safety of our staff and visitors.
