Worshippers, Construction Workers Escape Unharmed as Two-Storey Building Collapses in Lagos

A major disaster was narrowly averted on Monday when a two-storey building under construction collapsed at No. 3 Craig Street, off Apata Road, in the Shomolu area of Lagos State. The incident, which occurred around 1 p.m., caused panic but fortunately resulted in no casualties or injuries.

Eyewitnesses reported that the collapse happened during a construction phase while some workers were on site. Simultaneously, worshippers at the nearby Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Liberty Parish, were holding a service when the building’s pillars fell onto part of the church structure. Despite the partial damage, everyone inside the church escaped without harm.

Confirming the incident, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said that preliminary findings indicated the collapse occurred during the decking stage of construction. He also confirmed that no one was trapped beneath the rubble.

“The site has been cordoned off to prevent further risk while investigations continue,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
