Young People in Sagamu Embrace Peace: Surrender Arms Under CP’s Amnesty Initiative

In a significant step towards promoting peace and security, young individuals in Sagamu, Ogun State, have voluntarily surrendered their operational weapons under the Amnesty initiative led by CP Alamutu Mustapha of the Ogun State Police Command. The initiative, aimed at encouraging youth to pursue legitimate means of income, marks a pivotal moment in the fight against crime and violence in the region.

CP Mustapha, speaking during the disarmament exercise, highlighted the importance of providing young people with alternative pathways to prosperity. “We need more young persons to embrace legitimate means of income,” emphasized CP Mustapha. He acknowledged that some individuals are drawn into criminal activities due to peer pressure, intimidation, and the fear of reprisal.

The Amnesty initiative, which began with the assistance of the traditional ruler of Sagamu, the Akarigbo of REMO land, has seen a positive response from the community. Young people have willingly handed over their arms and dangerous weapons, signaling their commitment to denouncing criminal behavior and embracing positive change.

Today, on March 26, 2024, around 12:00 PM, the community witnessed a historic moment as the youth took a bold step towards peace and security. CP Alamutu assured flexibility in the Amnesty process, stating that the Command would not be rigid in its approach. He warned, however, that those who do not take advantage of this opportunity and are later apprehended will be treated as criminals.

To protect the identities of those who have surrendered their weapons, their faces will not be publicized. This measure aims to prevent stigmatization and encourage others who may still be hesitant to come forward.

CP Alamutu commended the peaceful efforts of the traditional ruler of Remoland and other community leaders in Sagamu. Their use of dialogue and persuasion has been instrumental in convincing cultists to shun criminality and embrace peace.

The Ogun State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents. The Amnesty initiative is part of a broader strategy to combat crime and create a more peaceful environment for all.
