Yuletide: Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative Disburses ₦200,000 Each to 250 Elderly Residents in Ogun

No fewer than 250 senior citizens in Ogun State have benefited from a ₦200,000 cash support each under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as part of efforts to ensure they enjoy the Christmas and New Year celebrations in comfort.

The intervention, which is a social investment programme designed to promote dignity, joy, and improved living conditions for the elderly, targets vulnerable persons aged 65 years and above across the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as well as veterans associated with the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).

Speaking at the event themed “Finding Joy in Old Age,” held on Monday at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, Senator Tinubu—represented by the First Lady of Ogun State, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun—said the initiative was aimed at appreciating the elderly for their immense contributions to Nigeria’s growth and development.

She disclosed that the Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative approved a total sum of ₦1.9 billion for the programme, with ₦50 million allocated to each state, including the FCT and DEPOWA. According to her, the yuletide cash support has become an annual tradition of the initiative, targeted at spreading joy and putting smiles on the faces of senior citizens during the festive season.

“I am delighted to join you at the third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) with the theme, ‘Finding Joy in Old Age,’” she said. “This programme reflects our administration’s commitment to ensuring that elderly Nigerians live with dignity and happiness in a country that truly values its people.

“Since the inception of this administration in 2023, the Renewed Hope Initiative has consistently celebrated our senior citizens every December, in recognition of their invaluable role in nation-building. Through this scheme, we continue to show gratitude to the men and women who laid the foundation for the Nigeria we enjoy today.”

She further explained that a total of 9,500 elderly beneficiaries nationwide would receive ₦200,000 each, amounting to a total disbursement of ₦1.9 billion, as approved by the initiative’s governing board. Each state, including the FCT and DEPOWA, is allocated ₦50 million for the exercise.

Also speaking at the event, the Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, expressed appreciation to Senator Tinubu for her consistent support for elderly citizens in the state. She noted that the initiative has become a cherished December tradition, bringing joy and relief to elderly men and women during the yuletide season.
