2027: Buhari Loyalists Declare Support for Atiku, Accuse Tinubu’s APC of Betraying Ideals
A major political realignment appears to be underway ahead of the 2027 general elections as loyalists of former President Muhammadu Buhari have openly pledged support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, signaling widening cracks within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development followed a private meeting in Abuja, where state chairmen of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) — Buhari’s original political base — converged at Atiku’s residence to formalize their defection. Atiku, who is leading efforts to build a broad coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), hosted the delegation and vowed to work with them to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
The CPC bloc, regarded as Buhari’s most loyal followers, accused the APC-led government of abandoning the values that united the coalition which brought the party to power in 2015.
One of the leaders declared:
“We are the true followers of Buhari, and we are here today, Sir. The CPC bloc is intact. President Buhari left an indelible mark in Nigeria’s history, and we will not allow it to fade. We are now ready to merge into the new political platform that God has chosen for us, appointing you as the leader — that platform being the ADC.”
They also criticized the present administration, claiming its leadership does not reflect the spirit of the original CPC movement. Drawing comparisons, another CPC chieftain said:
“When you see former Attorney-General Malami, ex-Kaduna Governor El-Rufai, and others who stood with Buhari, you immediately know they are CPC. Compare that with the faces in power today — they do not represent our values.”
In his response, Atiku welcomed the defection, describing it as a bold step toward building a formidable alliance to challenge APC’s dominance.
“This meeting represents the continuation of your journey and struggles. With your support, we can translate this into success and form a government that embodies inclusivity, service to the people, and commitment to peace and unity,” Atiku said.
The former Vice President urged them to mobilize their grassroots supporters for the ongoing voter registration exercise, which he described as critical to determining the outcome of the next election.
Political observers say the move could reshape the 2027 race, especially in northern Nigeria, where Buhari’s grassroots influence remains strong. The defection marks one of the most significant realignments since the APC’s formation a decade ago and underscores rising tensions within the ruling party.
