FUNAAB Students Clash With Police Over Alleged Arrests in Ogun State

Students of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), engaged in a confrontation with the Nigeria Police Force on Thursday morning over what they described as the “illegal arrest” of their colleagues on campus.

Videos shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) captured students protesting against the police. The footage showed claims of officers firing shots sporadically and reportedly hitting students with vehicles during the operation. Some students identified one of the policemen, accusing him of firing at them.

A user on X, Anthony Not Joshua, shared updates about the incident, stating that at least three students were apprehended by the police. “Around 6:30 AM today, the @PoliceNG came to arrest innocent students of FUNAAB. The students got angry and mobilized themselves to stop the illegal arrest. They picked up 3 students who are still in their custody. This is not their first time; they’ve been doing it for long. How long will this continue?” he wrote.

Several other users who claimed to be former FUNAAB students recounted similar occurrences in the past, emphasizing the regularity of such operations around the campus.

An X user, SIGMA-TEASE, wrote: “I’m an alumnus of FUNAAB. It’s always been happening. Even when a student was shot in the eye, nothing happened. The students mustn’t back down, enough is enough.”

Another user, Emmi Tee, commented: “Even while we were in school. It was a recurring issue around Gate, Oluwo, Isolu, etc., camp junction.”

GIRAN REPUBLIC added: “Na so dem dey do for Abeokuta, e fit be MAGBON SWAT cos na front of NOUN NNPC be this. Dem be werey.”

Efforts by SaharaReporters to contact the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, for comments were unsuccessful as calls to her phone went unanswered.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions, with calls for an end to such operations, which students and alumni describe as a long-standing issue.
