Ogun Govt Confirms Halting Gbenga Daniel’s Constituency Road Project

The Ogun State Government has confirmed ordering the suspension of work on the Paddy Arikawe–Oye–Igbimo Road in Sagamu GRA, a constituency project facilitated by Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East.

The directive was contained in a viral letter signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Dr. Lateef Yusuf, on behalf of Commissioner Ade Akinsanya, and dated September 17, 2025. The letter stated that the project commenced without securing the necessary approvals and permits from the state government, thereby violating due process.

The contractor was advised to seek official clearance before resuming work, as the road is also being considered for reconstruction by the state government.

The letter partly read:

“You need to seek government approval before work can commence. Nevertheless, this is one of the projects being considered for reconstruction by the state government in Sagamu Local Government. You are, therefore, advised to stop work and follow the necessary approval process.”

Addressing journalists, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, denied claims that the stop-work order was politically motivated. He explained that the move was strictly about compliance with established procedures.

“Even for federal roads, the state government must secure approval from the Federal Government before starting work. The same rule applies to state facilities,” Akinmade clarified, citing the late federal lawmaker Adewunmi Onanuga’s rural road interventions as examples of adherence to protocol.

However, Senator Daniel’s media aide, Steve Oliyide, condemned the action, describing it as counterproductive and premeditated. He alleged that it was not the first time projects facilitated by the former governor had been obstructed, pointing to previous interventions such as the Sagamu–Aiyepe Road and the Gateway Hotel Road in Ijebu-Ode.

Oliyide further argued that the state government’s stance undermines Federal Government initiatives and deprives Ogun residents of the benefits of critical development projects.
