Ogun TP Teacher Arrested After Pupil Loses Eye in Classroom Accident, Attempts Suicide
The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a student-teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, for allegedly causing an 11-year-old pupil, Alao Idera, to lose her right eye during a classroom incident. The victim is a primary six pupil at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in Obada Oko, Ogun State.
Adeyemo, a 400-level student of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, was on a teaching practice program at the school when the incident occurred. The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, explaining that the teacher was holding a cane in the classroom when the pupil rushed toward her, resulting in the cane accidentally piercing the child’s right eye.
The injured pupil was taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where her damaged eye was surgically removed. Odutola stated, “Following the complaint, the teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, was swiftly arrested and is currently being interrogated. Unlike the earlier case involving the death of Monday Arijo, this incident was purely accidental. The teacher did not flog the pupil or act out of malice.”
Odutola explained that the teacher had been preparing for an end-of-year party and was holding the cane when the unfortunate accident occurred.
After learning that the child’s eye had been removed, Adeyemo reportedly attempted suicide but was quickly rescued and rushed to the hospital, where she is now in stable condition.
This case follows a similar incident in October when Monday Arijo, an SS2 student of Obada Grammar School, died after being allegedly flogged 24 strokes of the cane and forced to perform 162 frog jumps by a teacher, Azamdjo Elijah. The teacher was arrested, and the school was temporarily shut down by the state government.
The police have launched an investigation into the latest incident while urging teachers to exercise caution in their interactions with students.
