Student Dies After Forced 162 Frog Jumps in Ogun State

Tension has gripped the Imeko Afon Local Government Area in Ogun State following the death of a student, Ariyo Monday, who reportedly passed away after a teacher allegedly punished him with 162 frog jumps and multiple cane strokes. Ariyo, a student at Obafemi Grammar School, reportedly died on Friday.

In a video shared online by activist Justadetoun, the teacher brought a trash can into Ariyo’s class and instructed students not to break it. In response, Ariyo jokingly mentioned that the dustbin had been purchased with students’ funds, which allegedly angered the teacher. The teacher then reported the comment to the principal, who reportedly gave approval for Ariyo to be punished.

According to Justadetoun, Ariyo received 164 strokes of the cane, and during the punishment, he collapsed. The video showed Ariyo lying on a hospital bed, visibly in pain and struggling to speak while receiving intravenous treatment.

Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident and clarified that Ariyo had received 24 strokes of the cane, along with 162 frog jumps. He was later taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta for medical attention but unfortunately passed away. Odutola further stated that the deceased’s body has been taken to the Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy as investigations into the cause of death continue.
